Porcelain veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry options due to their versatility, durability, and beauty. They can be used to correct a large number of cosmetic issues, and are incredibly natural looking as well as easy to take care of and stain-resistant.
Porcelain veneers can be thought of as a facade for the tooth. They are extremely thin and made of a strong dental ceramic that is translucent just like regular teeth. Veneers are bonded to the front of your tooth to disguise flaws and imperfections such as chips or deep discoloration.
If you are interested in porcelain veneers, please call San Antonio cosmetic dentist Dr. Craig Carlson of 5 Star Dental Group at 210-494-3511 to schedule your consultation.
How Are Veneers Put On?
Porcelain veneers do require some enamel to be removed from your natural teeth, so that the veneer can fit comfortably in your mouth. The amount of enamel removed will depend on the state of your teeth. If a tooth has areas of decay, it may require more extensive prep. Typically, though, we remove less than a millimeter of enamel.
Your teeth will be trimmed in the first appointment, and if necessary, temporary veneers will be placed. We'll take impressions of your teeth, and then Dr. Carlson will make your custom porcelain veneers himself over the course of approximately two to three weeks.
After your veneers are finished, you'll come back into the office, where Dr. Carlson will remove your temporaries and place the permanent veneers. During this appointment, you'll have a chance to examine the veneers and how they look in your mouth before Dr. Carlson cements them in place. The veneers can be trimmed and the shade adjusted to match your surrounding teeth.
Once you are satisfied with the look and feel of the porcelain veneers, Dr. Carlson will bond them permanently in place by using a special light that activates hardening chemicals in the cement.
When Should You Consider Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are an ideal solution for patients with dental issues such as:
- Deep discoloration from tetracycline, fluoride, root canals, or other types of stains
- Chips or cracks
- Minor gaps or crowding
- Slight crookedness
- Irregularly shaped teeth
In addition, porcelain veneers can be used to treat multiple cosmetic issues at once. If you have, for instance, discoloration and a chipped tooth and gapping that is bothering you, you can have each of these issues treated with porcelain veneers rather than having teeth whitening, dental bonding, and an orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign done.
If you have severe misalignment issues with your teeth, though, you may need to straighten them with an orthodontic treatment before proceeding with porcelain veneers.
