Why Replace Silver Fillings?

Most people may still have their silver fillings from years past.  It was the most used type of material for filling a cavity because it is strong, durable and does not cost a lot. Dentists liked it because it was easy to fit into a cavity.

However, we now know that silver has some disadvantages. It is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, especially if it is a tooth that is visible. Silver fillings can result in a weaker tooth because this material can expand and contract over time. These fluctuations can create spaces between the tooth and the filling and food and or bacteria can become trapped in between and allow a cavity to form.

The old silver filling can also wear down and become weak. This can result in a tooth not being well protected, and the tooth can crack.

But that is not the only problem, the silver fillings may contain mercury which may be harmful to your overall health. It can leak or cause stains on your teeth and gums.

If you are experiencing a problem with your current filling call Dr. Carlson right away at 210-494-3511.

What are The Advantages of a White Composite Filling?

  • Blends in - the white Composite filling blends in with your natural teeth and gives your smile an upgrade.

  • Reinforces - since the white composite is bonded to the tooth, it strengthens the remaining tooth.

  • Seals - it seals the tooth from future decay

  • Composite fillings are free from mercury

What is Involved in Replacing Silver Fillings?

Essentially it is almost like getting a new filling, the old filling is removed, once it has been extracted, it is refilled using the bonding solution and composite. A high-intensity UV light is used to harden the composite. This accelerates the hardening of the resin. Once it is checked to see if hardened properly the process is done.
