Porcelain veneers are an incredibly popular cosmetic dentistry treatment that can help patients of any age correct a large number of dental flaws. The porcelain veneers process is relatively simple and virtually painless, but it does take a few weeks to complete. We’ve put together this guide to porcelain veneers to help walk you through the whole process.Attractive woman choosing the best porcelain veneer shade to match her smile

If you are interested in porcelain veneers, please call San Antonio cosmetic dentist Dr. Craig Carlson today at 210-494-3511 to schedule your complimentary consultation.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

The first step in your porcelain veneers journey is coming in for your free initial consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Carlson will thoroughly examine your teeth, listen to your goals, and formulate a complete treatment plan along with estimated costs for you. He will explain to you the reasons behind his recommendations and can even show you an approximation of what your new smile will look like.

During your consultation, we can also go over dental financing options if the cost is higher than what you feel comfortable paying up front. High quality porcelain veneers are a lifetime investment, and the cost reflects this.

Step 2: Preparing Your Teeth

If you decide to proceed with having porcelain veneers done, the next step is to have your teeth prepared. Porcelain veneers are incredibly thin, yet in order to fit comfortably in your mouth your teeth will need to be filed down. The extent of your tooth preparation will depend on the complexity of your case.

The process of filing your teeth down is not painful. Dental enamel has no sensation, and your gums will be protected. If you are nervous about the procedure, ask about local anesthetic or conscious sedation options.

Step 3: Placing Your Temporary Veneers

Temporary veneers are necessary to protect your teeth while your permanent veneers are being crafted. Temporary veneers are usually made of acrylic, and serve both as protection and a test run before your permanent veneers are placed. You can get an initial idea of what your new smile will look like, and modifications can be made to your specifications.

Typically, you will need to wear your temporary veneers for a week or two. Dr. Carlson uses this time to craft each patient’s permanent porcelain veneers by hand in office, in order to ensure the highest quality possible. Most dentists outsource their porcelain veneers to a lab, but Dr. Carlson prefers to hand-craft his veneers.

Step 4: Placing Your Permanent Veneers

After Dr. Carlson has finished crafting your permanent veneers, it’s time to actually place them on your teeth! You’ll come back to the office for your final appointment, where your temporary veneers will be taken off and your permanent ones placed. During this time, you are free to ask for minor adjustments so that your smile will be absolutely perfect before you leave.

Once everything looks good to you, Dr. Carlson will cement your porcelain veneers in place. This is the final step, and you are free to walk out and enjoy your new smile. There are no follow-up appointments required, and no special maintenance is required either.
