Let’s begin with explaining what a crown and a bridge are.
A crown is placed over a damaged tooth and looks like a tooth-shaped cap. It is permanent and they can actually match it to the color of your other teeth! They are created by a lab technician and are customized to fit in your mouth and look as natural as possible. A crown will enable you to bite down and it also protects your dental alignment.
The reasons for needing a crown can be:
- To replace an older crown that may have fallen off due to outdated amalgam fillings
- To protect you after having a dental implant
- To protect a weakened tooth
- To protect a tooth after a root canal
- To protect a tooth from a very large cavity needing a large filling
- To attach a bridge
So the last bullet brings us to a great Segway. What is a bridge?
It sounds obtrusive when you hear the word, bridge however it simply replaces a missing tooth. A bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth or teeth if it has two healthy teeth surrounding the gap. They are designed to look, feel, and function like your regular teeth. Removable bridges attach to the teeth surrounding the gap using metal clasps. They can correct bite issues and bone loss that may be a result of the length of time the person has gone with a missing tooth. The healthy teeth at each end of the gap in the gums acts as anchors. The dentists will sculpture the existing teeth so that they can be fitted for crowns. The mold of the core of the tooth and sent to a lab. The bridge will then be made so that is can fit over the sculpted teeth. Like the crowns, everything will be matched for a natural look. The bridge is then permanently bonded to the teeth.
To be a good candidate for a bridge, you will:
- Have 2 strong teeth in their mouth on each side of the gap
- Strong roots
- Missing between one and three consecutive teeth
- Good jawbone density
