Our most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure is porcelain veneers, as they are incredibly versatile, durable, and natural looking. However, they can be a large upfront investment, so many patients wonder exactly how long they can last.Choosing porcelain veneers | San Antonio | Dr. Craig Carlson

The good news is that porcelain veneers can last for a very long time as long as you take great care of them. While porcelain veneers are not considered permanent, they can in fact last a lifetime in some patients. Other patients may need to replace one or two of their veneers, but it may take over a decade before you need a replacement. On average, porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years.

How To Ensure Long-Lasting Porcelain Veneers

The top reason for a veneer to come off is underlying tooth decay. If you get porcelain veneers placed, you need to be committed to maintaining great oral hygiene, including:

  • Brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each time
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Visiting Dr. Carlson for regular check-ups and deep cleaning
  • Avoiding sugary drinks and foods as much as possible

If you end up with cavities, your veneers are much more likely to need replacement. If your cavities are deep enough, you may need a root canal and a crown. If the decay is so bad that the tooth cannot be salvaged, we will likely need to extract the tooth and you may need a dental implant. Oral hygiene is the absolute most important aspect of caring for your teeth and veneers.

Other reasons a veneer may break or come off include:

  • Teeth grinding
  • Trauma to the mouth
  • Using your teeth as tools (opening packages, bottles, etc)
  • Chewing on ice

Grinding the teeth puts pressure on veneers, which may then loosen and come off over time. Although veneers are very strong, they are not made to withstand consistent grinding. In addition, if you abuse your veneers by using them as tools or by chewing on ice or other hard surfaces such as pens or candy, they are more likely to need replacement.

The one factor that you cannot control when it comes to your veneers' longevity is accidents. If you fall down the stairs or crash your bicycle, your veneers may not make it. If this is case, often Dr. Carlson will replace your veneers for free.

Our Porcelain Veneers Guarantee

Dr. Carlson understands that accidents happen, and despite taking the best care of your porcelain veneers, they may break or pop off through no fault of your own. If this happens within 5 years of placement, he will replace all affected veneers free of charge.

If your veneers are broken, loosened, or have fallen off due to a decision you consciously made, this guarantee does not apply and you will need to pay replacement costs. For example, if your veneer broke because you didn't have a bottle opener handy and decided to use your teeth, that is something you could have easily prevented and does not fall under our guarantee.
